The Bookenz Cafe

Welcome to the Bookenz Cafe – a podcast, bookclub and all over show for working women and men who need to relax however remain interested in listening and learning to something different and new.

In this first podcast series, Judith and Kelly loosely share their stories (but more often their opinions!) about their interests, their reading/podcast/movie lists and their work (as business coaches & mentors). They invite you to view the world through their eyes and have a laugh with them along the way.

Through their online book club, Judith and Kelly ask questions, frame answers and then ask more questions about the wonderful worlld of books.

Ep 15 Affluenza

We absolutely loved our topic today and loved talking about Affluenza or the “painful, contagious, socially transmitted condition of overload, debt, anxiety and waste resulting from the dogged pursuit of more”.

Kelly explains how sometimes money makes you “stuck” and Judith tells us about the Barefoot Investor and how we can all have more by being more confident with the money that we have. Oh!, and we unravel the gender pay gap (it’s largely because of motherhood, right?), Jerks and Prince Boofheads. All in just over 20 minutes – racing!

What we talked about?

  1. The Gender Pay Gap Is Largely Because of Motherhood
  2. Book: The Prince Boofhead Syndrome
  3. https://barefootinvestor.com/
  4. The rich kids of social media.

Ep 14 Do we eat aggression?

It’s out – Kelly doesn’t cook and Judith (apparently) does. What a brand new box of Maltesers don’t count!! Shit!!

Judith explains her thesis and how our diet does contribute to aggression, aggressive behaviour and to the fact that 350 urine samples ended up in her home freezer. She talks banging desks, kicking filing cabinets and statistical significance in males that diet (particularly their intake of meat, dairy and bananas) contributes to aggression.

Judith talks about the time of her life and ‘I am Woman’ and Kelly rubbishes them – in favour of the Beastie Boys, Salt & Peppa and Transvision Vamp (long live the 1990’s). We talked about how pay inequality and full time roles punish men too and we finished on the challenge that too many women are still finishing as #2 and being punished for their ‘stumbles’ and missteps – pretty extreme!

What we talked about?

  1. Judith’s Do we eat aggression?
  2. Why Women CEO’s aren’t CEO’s according to women who almost were
  3. The power of moments, Chip Heath
  4. Serotonin Eatery

Well, in this podcast, we attempted to link them all and we think we did OK … or maybe we didn’t and it’s just the cluggy vegetable soup that Kelly made for the occasion. We hope you enjoy!

Is planning actually better than doing? Is vacating better than working? Is checking in with wifi better for generating memories / uploading photos than for checking of emails and taking conference calls? We think it is!

In this podcast we talked mind, body, spirit and the value of truly being nice to yourself, having purpose, naming your pack animal and of avoiding, at all costs; Japanese flemm balls.

Ep 10 Buzzwords and Let it go Let it go…

It’s all very well that corporate teams bemuse themselves and each other with upbeat buzzwords – but are the 2017 buzzwords that chase workplace ‘happiness’ and ‘wellbeing’ actually driving us insane? Are we a getter to just let it go and grab the feel-goods in movies and books without all of the other palava?

What we talked about:

  1. #DoSomething
  2. Judith’s whole orange and white chocolate cake
  3. Kinky Boots
  4. The Big Short & Bridget Jones’s Baby

Ep 09 Confusing your personal brand

We’re all unique; but today, we chat about your personal brand and what / how you need to pick your best brand. We talked about those whose brand is crap, whose brand has been heavily manufactured, and whose brand is on point.

Whilst we started this episode on a lovely Sunday morning eating Judith’s Fig Jam Pie and talking about colours of the rainbow, we headed into mental health and talk solutions for those who may face the label of or be truly stuck by mental health in their workplace (as yes, it is as far away as you possibly get from telling someone to simply “pull yourself together!’)

Wishing you mentally healthy workplaces and catch you on the other side.

What we spoke about:

  1. Mental Health First Aid Courses
  2. Man Up (Gus Worland)
